Ear training—the process of developing your listening skills for music—is a journey.
Every musician is on this journey. The lucky ones have noticed that they are, and are taking active steps to help them on their way. As a visitor to this site, the chances are pretty high that you’re in this lucky minority, who recognise the value of aural skills for musicianship, and are accelerating their process by paying it the attention it deserves.
It’s not enough simply to know you’re on a journey though. If all you do is try to move faster, there’s every possibility you’re heading faster… in the wrong direction!
Here’s 4 steps to making your journey of musicianship a success:
1. Know your destination
Until you’ve decided what you want to achieve, you will never really find satisfaction in ear training. The exercises won’t have real meaning, and you’ll find it very difficult to plan your training and to keep yourself motivated.
2. Know where you are now
Knowing where you want to get to is vital – but almost as important is: knowing where you’re starting from!
Too many ear training students don’t take the time to assess where they’re starting from, or what progress they’ve made. Don’t be one of them!
3. Plan your route
Once you know your destination and you know where you are, all that remains is to plan the route from A to B.
So how can you construct a plan when you don’t yet know all about the topic? We’ve got some suggestions and pointers to help you do just that:
And remember you can always ask for help! Leave a comment below or come ask in our forums and we’ll help you develop your plan.
4. Choose your transport
So, you know where you are and where you want to get to. You’ve figured out your route. What’s left?
Well, even with a clear route, you need some way to move yourself from A to B. This is your training methodology, how you actually practise and develop your ears.
Time to get started!
So, start from the beginning: What do you want to achieve? Then ask yourself “Well, where am I now?”
Use all the resources available online to plan your route, and choose the training tools and methods which will best transport you along that route.
Then, once you’ve achieved your goals, make sure you come back and tell us all about it!
